Nitrogen Gas-Intermediate

Detection of nitrogen

The sodium fusion extract is boiled with iron(3) sulphate and then acidified with concentrated sulphuric acid . The formation of Prussian blue color confirms the presence of nitrogen.

Uses of nitrogen

Nitrogen is used to make fertilisers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives. Nitrogen gas is also used to provide an unreactive atmosphere. It is used in this way to preserve foods, and in the electronics industry during the production of transistors and diodes.

Nitrogen is essential for life on Earth. It is a component of all proteins and it can be found in all living systems. Nitrogen compounds are present in organic materials, foods, fertilizers, explosives and poisons. Named after the Greek word nitron, for "native soda," and genes for "forming," nitrogen is the fifth most abundant element in the universe. Nitrogen gas constitutes 78% of Earth's air.
