Recall Magnetic Field Due to a Straight Current Carrying Conductor
Physics
definition
Experimental demonstration of magnetic effect of electric current
Take some magnetic compass and place them near a wire carrying no current. It is observed that all needles point towards north due to earth's magnetic field. Now pass some current through the wire. It is observed that the needles orient in circular directions as shown in the figure. This suggests the existence of magnetic field due to the electric current in the wire.
