Battle of Plassey

The teacher divided the class into two teams and advised them to play the game 'tug of war' with good team spirit.

There was a cunning member in one team who started persuading the other team members to cheat.

With the greed of becoming the next monitor of the class, one student cheated on his team.

As he did not pull the rope and didn’t participate well, the team lost the match.

When the team members started blaming him, the teacher stopped them and said, cheating always causes bad results.

Along with the explanation, she moved to history and to the very first victory of the East India Company in India, where cheating changed the entire scenario.

The teacher was talking about the first victory of East India Company in India that is, the 'Battle of Plassey' which took place on the 23rd of June, 1757.

The background of the Battle of Plassey

Siraj ud-Daulah became the Nawab of Bengal after the death of Alivardi Khan in 1756.

This worried the company about their own position in the area as they were looking for a puppet ruler.

Siraj ud-Daulah was not that kind of a puppet nawab that the company wanted.

It became impossible for the company to look after the political domain and the fortification of the area, all because of Siraj Ud Daulah.

When all the negotiations failed, Siraj ud-Daulah marched to the English Factory at Kasimbazar and captured the officials of the company.

Siraj ud-Daulah disarmed the Englishmen and locked the warehouse. Then, he marched to Calcutta to establish control over the company’s fort there.

The battle begins

Hearing the news of Calcutta, Robert Clive moved with the armed forces to handle the nawab.

Robert Clive planned to take help from a cunning leader of Siraj ud- Daulah's army, Mir Jafar and the banker Jagat Seth.

Robert Clive promised Mir Jafar that he would make Mir Jafar the Nawab of Bengal.

With the dream of becoming the Nawab, Mir Jafar didn’t fight in the battle.

The idea worked well for Robert Clive and finally, in 1757, the battle took place in which Siraj ud-Daulah was defeated and killed.

This battle and victory were really important in history as this was the first major victory of the company in India.

Results of the battle of Plassey

After the death of Siraj ud-Daulah, Mir Jafar was crowned as the Nawab.

The company succeeded with the help of one internal cheater. Finally, a puppet ruler was installed by them.

The company was not interested in administrative responsibilities but was interested in the expansion of trade with the help of the local puppet rulers.

But soon they realized that even the puppet rulers were not as helpful because they all wanted respect from their people.

History has witnessed numerous backstabbers and Mir Jafar was one of them.

The greed of succession was a cause for many battles in history, especially where the Company was involved.

Battle of Plassey was the first victory for the Company over India where the Company managed to get the internal support and defeated the Nawab.
