Conversion of Units of Length and Weight

Amit, Sumit and Rohit are three friends.

The all have three different sticks and some amount of sugar of different lengths and weights respectively.

Sumit says my stick is metres long and i have gm of sugar.

Amit tells that his stick is feet long and he has kg sugar.

And in last Rohit tells that his stick is cm long and has kg sugar.

Now, Rohit’s friend arrive and asks if they can tell him the total length and weight.

Since, the measurements here are in different units, so to add them we need to convert them in a common unit.

Let’s try to find the total length and weight.

The length of sticks and weight of sugar are different and also in different units, so we can’t add them directly.

So, we need to convert the length in a common unit and also the weight.

Let’s see how to convert the length from different unit to a single unit. We have lengths as

We know the relationship between the lengths (from larger to smaller) as,

Similarly, we know the relationship between the lengths (from small to large) as,

So, we can convert the length m in cm as

Similarly, we can convert the length feet in cm as

The third length is already is in cm. So, no need to convert that,

Now, we can easily find the total length by adding the lengths in .

Similarly, we can convert the weights into same unit in order to add them.

The relationship between the various units of weight is,

Now, we can changes our weights in grams as,

And hence the total weight can be calculated now as,

Let’s take some more examples of unit conversion.

Suppose, we want to convert ton to and and .

We know Ton is equal to kg so, we can convert ton into kg as,

Now, convert kg to gram and then to .

So, here we convert ton into gram and milligram.

Suppose, we want to convert g into .

We can convert these grams into as,

So, we find that g and kg are equivalent to each other.

Revision

Conversion of unit is required when we want to add two different units of weight or length.

While converting from large length to small we need to multiply.

And while converting from small length to large we need to divide.

Similarly, in case of weight conversion, we can convert units by multiplying or dividing accordingly.
