Deuteromycetes

There are some fungi that only shows asexual reproduction in their life cycle.

While some other fungi shows both asexual and sexual reproduction in their life.

The asexually reproducing fungi belong to deuteromycetes class of fungi (also known as fungi imperfecti)

There are many characters of deuteromycetes that are similar to other fungi.

Deuteromycetes also have septate and branched hyphae.

They also have multinucleated septa with septal pores.

Asexual reproduction takes place by formation of conidia.

Asexual reproduction can also take place by the formation of spores like oidia, chlamydospores and pycnidia.

They are saprophytic or parasitic and these parasitic forms cause many diseases

Lets us see some examples of the parasitic forms and diseases caused by them.

Helminthosporium oryzae causes seasame or brown spot leaf disease of rice and it was responsible for Bengal famine (in 1942-43).

Early Blight of potato and tomato is caused by Alternaria

This results in withering, falling of stems, leaves and development of oval, brown, concentric rings on leaves.

Red rot of sugarcane is caused by Colletotrichum falcatum.

Fusarium species causes wilting of vascular plants like potato, tomato, banana, cotton, pea etc. due to blockage of tracheary elements.

Tikka disease in groundnut characterised by appearance of circular, necrotic, dark-brown or blackish leaf spots is caused by Cercospora Personata.

Some genera of fungi like Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichophyton cause ringworms or tineas in humans

Arthrobotrys is most unique as it forms a trap for capturing and feeding on nematodes.

Nematode is paralysed by secretion of nematotoxin, digestive enzymes are poured and digested body is absorbed.

Deuteromycetes is a class of fungi that shows only asexual reproduction in their life cycle.

Most of them are parasitic and cause various diseases.

Brown spot disease of rice is caused by helminthosporium oryzae, early blight of potato, tomato is caused by Alternaria and Fusarium causes vascular wilts.

Colletotrichum falcatum causes red rot of sugarcane and Cercospora Personata causes tikka disease in groundnut.

Genera like Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichophyton cause ringworms in humans.

Arthrobotrys feeds on nematode while Gibberella fujikuroi produces plant hormone, gibberellin.
