Land Forms Formed by River and Sea
You must have seen that a new shiny bike is not shiny after a few months and that is because the colour has eroded.
Just as the bike got faded, our land surface of the earth is getting changed continuously due to weathering and erosion.
Weathering is the breaking up of the rocks on the earth's surface.
And erosion is the process of removal of soil or any particles on the land surface.
The weathered and eroded material is carried and deposited by different agents like river water and the sea waves.
River water and the sea waves help in the formation of different landforms on Earth.
Let us see the role of River Water in forming different landforms
The running water in the river erodes the land.
When the river falls suddenly from a great height of hard rocks, it forms a waterfall.
As rivers enter the plain, they twist and turn to form large bends known as meanders.
Few meanders cut off from the river and form cut-off lakes, which are called ox-bow lakes.
And the raised bank of the river is called levees.
Sometimes the river overflows from the river banks in the plains. Then the flood plains are formed.
In the flood plains, the river deposits the sediments like small stones and the fertile soil.
As the river flows near the sea, the speed of the river decreases and starts to deposit all its sediments.
And then the river breaks into small streams called distributaries. Each distributary forms its own mouth.
The collection of sediments from all the mouths of the distributaries forms the delta.
Now we will see the role of the Sea Waves in forming different landforms
When the sea waves hit the rocks, cracks are developed.
As time passes they become large and form sea caves and arches.
Over time erosion breaks the roof and only walls are left, that are called Stacks.
The steep rocky coast rising almost vertically above seawater is called a sea cliff.
The erosion and deposition of the sea waves gives rise to coastal lands.
The sea waves deposit sediments along shores and form beaches.
Revision
The land surface of the earth is getting changed continuously due to the process of weathering and erosion.
The weathered and eroded material is carried and deposited by different agents like river water and the sea waves.
Running water erodes the land forming meanders, flood plains, and distributaries.
Meanders are twists and turns of the river which form large bends.
Sea waves form landforms like Sea caves, arches, stacks, and cliffs.
Sea wave erosion forms our beaches and coastal land.
