We Humans have the tendency to always find a new way to send information to different places.

Like we use a cellphone that sends and receive information using invisible radio waves.

Similarly in telephones the wire that connects between the two telephone exchange are known as optical fiber.

Construction of Optical Fibers.

A fiber optic is constructed using incredibly thin strands of glass known as optical fiber.

The cables can consist of few fibres or hundreds of them depending on the usage.

The structure of optic fiber is such that it is made of three separate parts.

The main part of the optic fibre in the middle is called the core.

Wrapped around the outside of the core is another layer of glass called the cladding. It has low refractive index than core.

So, now let’s move on to discuss the working of the optical fibre.

Working Of Optical Fibre.

The light travels down a fibre optic cable by bouncing repeatedly off the walls.

As the photons gets reflected by the glass of the cable, the light remains inside the cable.

Another thing that keeps light inside the cable is the structure, as the core where light travels and cladding keeps the light signals inside the core.

There are two types of optical fibres and they are discussed in following panels.

Single mode and multi mode optical fibre which are discussed one by one in following slides.

In a single mode fiber optic cable it has a small central core that allows only one mode of light to travel through it at once.

A multi mode optic fiber it features a much larger central core allowing a greater amount of light to travel through it at once.

The optical fibres have various uses in every field of life. So let’s discuss few of them.

Applications of optical fibres.

Various technologies use optical fibres as mode of transmission of signal and information.

Like in computer networking as optical cables have advantages as less attenuation, no interference and higher bandwidth over old style copper cables.

In broadcasting as apart from offering much higher capacity, optical fibers suffer less from interference, so offer better signal quality also require less amplification to boost signals.

Gastroscopes were the first proper application of fiber optics as it helped doctor peer inside our bodies without cutting them open.
