People of Rainforests

Amazon rainforests are not only home to a variety of flora and fauna but many tribal groups also live there.

People living here are very much dependant on the forest for their survival.

Let us see the day-today activities of people of rainforests.

Normally men go for hunting and fishing and women take care of the crops.

The main crops grown here are tapioca, pineapple, and sweet potato.

The main food is manioc, also known as cassava that grows under the ground like the potato.

They also eat queen ants and egg sacs.

People also grow coffee, maize and cocoa.

Now let us see how the people of Amazon forests live.

Rainforests provide a lot of wood for the houses, hence people there started living in houses made of wood.

People live there in thatched houses shaped like beehives.

A thatched house is one which has a roof made up of dry vegetation and straw.

Some live in an apartment-like house called "Maloca".

In recent years Amazon rainforests are going through many changes.

In older days the interior of the forests could be reached only by Amazon river.

But in 1970 Trans Amazon Highway was made, making all parts of forests reachable.

The original people of Amazon forests were pushed from there and forced to settle somewhere else.

This development gave rise to the gradual destruction of the forest.

There is a huge loss of biodiversity and the land is turning into a barren landscape.
