Potential Difference
Let us place a cold pan on stove
We observe that heat is transferred from hot body to cold body. we can feel hotness of the pan by touching.
So there is temperature difference between them and heat is transferred to the cold pan.
Let us take an another example
Water flows from high level to low level because there is pressure difference between the two points.
In the same manner difference in electric potential between two points is called as potential difference.
Here we used a word electric potential. Let's learn about it
Similar to the flow of water, charges flow from one point to other
When charges flow from one point to the other, it causes Electric potential.
Electric potential at any point is the amount of work done to bring an unit positive charge from infinity to that point
Now, if we consider two such points
To find out the potential difference between point “O” and point “P”, we can write as above
Work done to bring charge Q from infinity to point “O” can be written as above
Thus we can write potential difference between point “O” and point “P” as above.
Thus potential difference between two points is the amount of work done to bring a unit positive charge from one point to another
Potential difference is also known as voltage and is measured using unit Volt
