Safety Measures During Earthquake

Before doing any experimental work we need to take some safety measures

For example, while doing any nuclear test or handling nuclear materials, scientists and workers in nuclear station need to wear special suits

These especially designed suits protects them from nuclear radiation

Thus, this is a safety measure to protect themselves from harmful radiation

Similarly, we need to have early prevention techniques to prepare or protect ourselves from different types of disasters

Now disasters can be both natural as well as man made. Natural disasters includes tsunamis, earthquakes, cyclones etc

Unlike other types of natural disasters, earthquakes can happen at any time, without any early notice

An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy from earth's surface

Earthquake causes a huge loss of life and property

Being prepared for an earthquake will help us to protect ourselves, our family and our home from earthquake

So let us study some of the safety measures to protect ourselves and our family during earthquakes

Suppose you are inside home when a earthquake hits i.e. you are indoors

Then drop down and take shelter under a table and remain there until the shaking stops

You should always stay away from bookshelves and other furniture as that can fall on you

Use stairs in place of elevators and always be ready for fire alarms to activate

If you are outside home, then drop to the ground and stay away from buildings, power lines etc

While driving – stop and set your parking brake. Avoid bridges, power lines, trees, buildings, and other things that may fall on your car

If you are in a stadium or theater, stay at your seat and protect your head and neck with your arms until the shaking stops

Then, walk out slowly, watching for anything that could fall during aftershocks (i.e. after the shaking of the surface stops)

Never run outside or to other rooms during the shaking, also do not stand in doorway

Let us have a look on how we can prepare our homes for earthquake

For everyone of us, home is the safest place. That's why we should first prepare our homes, so that it can tolerate the primary stage of any disaster

At first, one should construct 'Quake safe' building by consulting with engineers or architectures

In home, large or heavy objects must be placed on lower shelves

Repairing of deep cracks and other structural defects in homes should be done

Some insurance companies offer earthquake insurance, so one may ask the state insurance commissioner about it
