Speed and its Unit

Every day we notice a number of scenarios which gives us the concept of slow and fast motion.

Let’s consider the motion of a car and a bicycle.

We notice that a car travels faster than the bicycle. Or we can also say, the bicycle travels slower than a car.

We compare their motion on behalf of their speed and we measure this speed in context of time and distance.

Let’s discuss the Speed and its unit.

Speed is defined as distance traveled by an object per unit time.

Mathematically, it will be written as

Hence, its unit will be

Because, SI unit of distance and time are meter and second respectively.

Now for measuring the larger amounts we can take the unit distance as kilometer instead of meter.

Similarly, for measuring the larger amounts we can take the unit time as minute and hour instead of second.

Depending upon the requirements, we use several types of units.

For example, meter per second (m/s), kilometer per hour (km/h), miles per hour, etc.

Revision

Speed is defined as the distance per unit time.

And its unit will be as
