The Islands of India

India had two great island groups- Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar.

The Lakshadweep islands lie in the Arabian sea.

The Andaman and Nicobar islands lie in the Bay of Bengal.

Let us explore the Lakshadweep Island

Situated close to the Malabar coast, Lakshadweep is a small group of islands in the Arabian sea.

These islands are of coral origin, and cover only a small area of 32 sq. km.

This group of islands is composed of small coral islands. The coral secretion and their skeletons from coral deposits in the form of reefs.

These reefs are mainly of three types: the barrier reef, fringing reef, and the atolls.

It is a Union Territory, with Kavaratti being the administrative headquarters.

A great diversity of flora and fauna can be found here.

The only crop of economic importance in this region is coconut.

Most islands are very prone to sea-level change. They do not rise more than 5 m above sea level.

The island Pitti is actually uninhabited and has a bird sanctuary.

The Minicoy island is the largest of the bunch, at an area of 4.53 sq km.

Let us explore the Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Andaman and Nicobar islands are far more in number than Lakshadweep, and are more scattered.

This region is also considered a Union Territory, with Port Blair being the administrative HQ.

Port Blair is located in South Andaman. Andaman islands are actually 572 in number.

Another important thing that makes these islands special is that they have India’s only active volcano. This volcano is found on the barren island.

There are two broad categories of islands here- the Andaman in the north, and the Nicobar in the south.

It is actually believed that these islands are the raised portions of submarine mountains.

In north Andaman, the Saddle peak is the highest peak, at 737 meter.

Due to lying close to the equator, these islands experience equatorial climate.

As the Lakshadweep islands, these also have a great diversity of flora and fauna.
