Question

What is observed when copper sulphate solution is electrolysed using a platinum anode?
  1. Copper ions (cations) move towards the cathode.
  2. None of the above
  3. Copper ions (cations) move towards the anode.
  4. Copper ions (cations) move towards the bottom.

A
Copper ions (cations) move towards the bottom.
B
Copper ions (cations) move towards the cathode.
C
Copper ions (cations) move towards the anode.
D
None of the above
Solution
Verified by Toppr

In the aqueous solution, copper sulphate dissociates into its respective ions. On passing electric current, the copper ions (cations) move towards the cathode and get deposited as copper. Simultaneously, the sulphate ions (anions) move towards the anode. So, blue colour of the solution disappears.

Assertion :When an electric current is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, sodium ions move towards cathode and chloride ions move towards anode. Reason: Cathode is a negatively charged electrode and therefore attracts NA+ions. Anode is a positively charged electrode and therefore attracts Cl ions
