Question

Assuming that Hund's rule is violated, the bond order and magnitude of diatomic molecule of B2 is:
  1. 1 and diamagnetic
  2. 0 and diamagnetic
  3. 1 and paramagnetic
  4. 0 and paramagnetic

A
1 and paramagnetic
B
0 and diamagnetic
C
0 and paramagnetic
D
1 and diamagnetic
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Assuming that Hund's rule is violated, the bond order and magnitude of diatomic molecule of B2 will be 1 and diamagnetic.B2 has 10 electrons. Its M.O diagram is:

σ1s2,σ1s2,σ2s2,σ2s2,π2p1xπ2p1y
If Hund's rule is not beyond than M.O diagram will be
σ1s2,σ1s2,σ2s2,σ2s2,π2p2x

Bond order =1/2[64]=1 and as there are no lone electrons it is diamagnetic.
