A geostationary orbit is a circular geosynchronous orbit in which the satellite is placed at an altitude of approximately 35786 km above mean sea level. The orbit lies in the plane of the Earth's equator. An object in such an orbit has an orbital period equal to earth's rotational period and thus appears motionless.
