Question

A vessel at 1000K contains CO2 with a pressure of 0.5 atm. Some of CO2 is converted into CO on addition of graphite. The value of Kp at equilibrium when total pressure is 0.8 atm will be ?
  1. 0.18 atm
  2. 1.8 atm
  3. 2 atm
  4. 1 atm

A
2 atm
B
0.18 atm
C
1.8 atm
D
1 atm
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The given reaction is,

CO+C2CO

Initial pressure of CO , Pi=0.5atm

Initial pressure of CO=0

Final pressure of CO=(0.5x)atm

Final pressure of CO=2xatm

Total pressure at equilibrium = Partial pressures of CO and CO

Peq=(0.5x)+2x=0.8atm

x=0.3.

Partial pressures of CO=0.2atm

and Partial pressures of CO=0.6atm

Thus, Kp = P2COPCO2 = (0.6)20.2 = 1.8atm

Hence, option B is correct
