Plot the following point in the Cartesian plane
M (-2, 4)

Draw the xaxis and yaxis.
The given point is M(2,4)
We know that, the xcoordinate of a point is the perpendicular distance of the point from the yaxis and the ycoordinate is the perpendicular distance from the xaxis.
The point M will be at a distance of 2 units, towards left from the yaxis. Left because the xcoordinate is negative. Also, the point will be at 4 units distance from the xaxis upwards. Upwards because the ycoordinate is positive.

Hence, the point M lies in the second quadrant.

Finally, the position of the point M will be as shown in the above graph.
