Draw the $x-axis$ and $y-axis$.

The given point is $M(-2,4)$

We know that, the $x-coordinate$ of a point is the perpendicular distance of the point from the $y-axis$ and the $y-coordinate$ is the perpendicular distance from the $x-axis$.

$\therefore$ The point $M$ will be at a distance of $2$ units, towards left from the $y-axis$. Left because the $x-coordinate$ is negative. Also, the point will be at $4$ units distance from the $x-axis$ upwards. Upwards because the $y-coordinate$ is positive.

Hence, the point $M$ lies in the second quadrant.

Finally, the position of the point $M$ will be as shown in the above graph.
