Question

Which of the following act as a genetic material for Retrovirus?
  1. Single stranded DNA
  2. RNA
  3. Double stranded duplex DNA
  4. DNA-RNA hybrid

A
Single stranded DNA
B
DNA-RNA hybrid
C
Double stranded duplex DNA
D
RNA
Solution

Retrovirus is a virus that is composed not of DNA but of RNA. Retroviruses have an enzyme, called as reverse transcriptase, that gives them the unique property of transcribing their RNA into DNA after entering a cell. The retroviral DNA can then integrate into the chromosomal DNA of the host cell, to be expressed there. HIV is a retrovirus.

Q5
“Both the strands of DNA are not copied during transcription”.
Choose the correct reasons from the following.

A. If both strands of DNA act as a template, RNA would be coded with different sequences, leading to formation of two different polypeptide chains from the same segment of DNA.

B. If both strands of DNA act as a template, RNA would be coded with different sequences, leading to formation of the same polypeptide chains from the same segment of DNA.

C. If both strands of DNA act as a template for transcription, it simplifies the genetic information transfer machinery.

D. If both strands of DNA act as a template for transcription, it complicates the genetic information transfer machinery.

E. If both strands of DNA act as a template for transcription, dsRNA would be formed which would prevent protein formation.
