Formation of feminine nouns from Masculine nouns

To begin with, let us first understand about the two main commonly used genders.

Masculine nouns are words for men, boys and male animals

On the other hand, feminine nouns are words for women, girls and female animals.

These feminine nouns can be easily formed from their respective masculine nouns.

Let us look at method 1

In this method, we form feminine noun from masculine noun by using an entirely different word.

Let us look at an example.

King George was sworn in as the new king of England.

“King” is the masculine noun here. Let us convert it into its feminine noun.

We form its feminine noun by replacing it with an entirely different word.

So, the sentence after converting king into a feminine noun would be

Queen Alexandria has been sworn in as the new queen of England.

Hence, the feminine form of “king” is “queen”.

In this method, we form the feminine noun from masculine noun by adding a syllable -ess without dropping a vowel.

Here is an example.

The prince went to the forest to hunt a deer.

To convert the masculine noun “prince” into its feminine form, we simply add -ess at the end of it. We also make sure that in this method, the vowel at the end of it is not omitted.

So, the sentence after converting the masculine noun into its feminine form would be

The princess went to the forest to hunt a deer.

In this method, we form the feminine noun from masculine noun by adding a syllable -ess after dropping a vowel.

Let us look at an example.

The actor performed some deadly stunts in the upcoming film.

The feminine noun of actor is formed by first dropping the vowel ‘o’ and then adding -ess at the end of it.

So after conversion of the masculine noun into feminine noun, the sentence would be

The actress performed some deadly stunts in the upcoming film.

Now, let us look at Method 4

In this method,we form the feminine noun by adding a word before or after the masculine noun.

Here is an example.

My grandfather is my hero.

The masculine noun grandfather can be converted into its feminine form by adding the word ‘mother’ after the word ‘grand’.

So, it will be: My grandmother is my hero.
