A chemical commonly called dioxin has been very much in the news in the past few years. It is the byproduct of herbicide manufacture and is thought to be quite toxic. Its formula is C12H4Cl4O2. If you have a sample of dirt (28.3 g) that contains 1.0×10−4% dioxin, the moles of dioxin in the dirt sample is expressed as x×10−8 mol. Find the value of x as nearest integer.
The formula of dioxin =C12H4Cl4O2
Molar mass of dioxin =12(12)+4(1)+4(35.5)+2(16)=322 g/mol
Mass of dioxin =28.3×10−4100=2.83×10−5g
Number of moles of dioxin =2.83×10−5322=9×10−8=x×10−8
Hence, x=9
