The process of disintegration and decomposition of rocks in situ is generally called weathering. Weathering is essentially the breakdown of rocks due to chemical and mechanical processes at their places. Weathering involves two types of changes in the rocks, (i) physical or mechanical change and (ii) chemical change. So weathering can be defined as all aspects of the mechanism of breakdown of rocks.
