Newtons Corpuscular Theory

Light is driving the life from its beginning and is still a source of wonder for scientists.

When if we want to see the something, then there is a need of light.

Because when the light rays strike the surface of the object and reflected back.

After the reflection, the reflected rays strike on my retina and we get the vision.

Many of scientists have given the theory about the nature of light.

But, here we will discuss the theory given by the Newton called Newton’s Corpuscular Theory.

Let’s discuss the Newton’s Corpuscular Theory.

Newton’s said that the light is composed of very tiny, elastic and rigid particles called corpuscules.

When this corpuscules enter into our eye, we get the sensation of light or sensation of vision.

And different shape and size of corpuscules lead to the different type of colours.

Now this corpuscules will obey the law of reflection and law of refraction.

That means they can reflect from the surface and they can refract through a surface.

But this theory has huge number of drawbacks. Hence, it is not taken into consideration yet all.

Let’s discuss the drawbacks of Newton’s corpuscular theory.

Suppose a source of light is emitting a corpuscles and corpuscles is the form of particle (matter).

That means there should reduction in mass of the light source when it is emitting light.

But the scientists are found that no such reduction in the mass of the light source and this theory is failed.

Now, according to Newton’s corpuscular theory, the speed of light in denser medium is more and in the rarer medium is less.

But in actual, the speed of light is rarer medium is more and in the denser is less. Hence, Newton’s corpuscular theory was rejected.

Newton’s corpuscular theory could not explain the phenomenon of interference and diffraction.

And it also could not explain the partial reflection and partial refraction.

Since, this theory has lot of drawbacks. Hence, this theory was completely rejected.

Revision

According to Newton’s corpuscular theory the light is composed of very tiny, elastic and rigid particles called corpuscules.

And this corpuscules will obey the law of reflection and law of refraction.

But, it is not happening. Therefore, Newton’s corpuscular theory was rejected.
