Question

The stopping potential for photoelectrons from a metal surface is V1 when monochromatic light of frequency ν1 is incident on it. The stopping potential becomes V2 when monochromaitc light of another frequency is incident on the same metal surface. If h be the Planck's constant and e be the charge of an electron then the frequency of light in the second case is
  1. ν1eh(V2+V1)
  2. ν1+eh(V2V1)
  3. ν1+veh(V2+V1)
  4. ν1eh(V2V1)

A
ν1+veh(V2+V1)
B
ν1+eh(V2V1)
C
ν1eh(V2+V1)
D
ν1eh(V2V1)
Solution
Verified by Toppr

hν1=ϕ0+eV1 .......(i)
hν2=ϕ0+eV2 .......(ii)

From equations (i) and (ii) we have:
h(ν1ν2)=e(V1V2)

ν1ν2=eh(V1V2)

ν2=eh(V2V1)+ν1
