Question

The work function of metal is in the range of 2 eV to 5 eV. Find which of the following wavelength of light cannot be used for photoelectric effect:
(Consider, Plank constant =4×1015 eVs, velocity of light =3×107 m/s)
  1. 510 nm
  2. 650 nm
  3. 570 nm
  4. 400 nm

A
510 nm
B
650 nm
C
400 nm
D
570 nm
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Given that, 2eVϕ5eV
Wavelength corresponding to minimum and maximum values of work function are
λmax=hcE=4×1015×3×1032=6×107m=600nm
And λmin=hcE=4×1015×3×1085=2.4×107m=240nm
Clearly, wavelength range would be: 240λ600
Thus, wavelength 650 nm is not suitable for photoelectric effect.
