A ticking clock sounds less when heard through a metal.
The speed of sound (longitudinal wave) in a medium is given by Sir Newton as ,
v=√K/ρ ,
where K= elasticity of the medium ,
ρ= density of the medium ,
since solids have maximum elasticity and gases have minimum i.e. Es>El>Eg ,
therefore by above relation , we get speed of sound in solids is maximum and in gases is minimum i.e. vs>vl>vg ,
as metal is generally a solid , so speed of sound in metal will be faster than in air being a gaseous mixture i.e. given statement is false .
