What is the cell theory? Who propounded it and when?
The three major highlights of the cell theory are as follows:
- The cell is the smallest unit of structure of all living things
- The cell is the unit of function of all living things
- All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
The theory was propounded in 1839 by Schwann and Schleiden.
Rudolf Virchow in 1858 added the last point mentioned above to the cell theory.
