Question

0.3 kg of steam at 1000C is mixed with 6 kg of water. After the steam condenses the temperature of the mixture rises to 400C. The initial temperature of the water is:
  1. 700C
  2. 300C
  3. 400C
  4. 100C

A
300C
B
400C
C
700C
D
100C
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Heat released by steam on condesation is Q1=0.3×2260×103 J ;
where, Latent heat of condensation of steam is : 2260×103J/kgoC
Let the initial temperature of water be T.
Balancing the energy released and absorbed,
Q1+0.3×4200×(10040)=6×4200×(40T) ;
where spceific heat of water is: 4200 J/kgoC
So, 40T30T=10oC
