Vijayalaya, who belonged to the ancient chiefly family of the Cholas from Uraiyur, captured the Kaveri delta from the Muttaraiyar chief in the middle of the ninth century and established the Chola dynasty. The successors of Vijayalaya conquered neighboring regions, and the kingdom grew in size and power, after which they expanded control over most of the south India areas.
