Question

A 30 V, 90 W lamp is to be operated on a 120 V DC line. For proper glow, a resistor of ..... should be connected in series with the lamp.
  1. 20
  2. 30
  3. 40
  4. 10

A
10
B
20
C
40
D
30
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Resistance of the lamp R=V2P
R=30290
R=10Ω
Current flowing through the lamp I=PV
I=9030=3A
DC line voltage Vd=120 V
Resistance of the line must be R=VdI
We get R=1203=40Ω
Let R1 be the external resistance to be connected in series with the lamp for proper glow.
R+R1=R
OR 10+R1=40
R1=30Ω
