Question

A 5000 kg rocket is set for vertical firing. The exhaust speed is 800 ms1. To give an upward acceleration of 20 ms2, the amount of gas ejected per second to supply the needed thrust is (g=10 ms2)
  1. 185.5 kgs1
  2. 187.5 kgs1
  3. 137.5 kgs1
  4. 127.5 kgs1

A
127.5 kgs1
B
187.5 kgs1
C
137.5 kgs1
D
185.5 kgs1
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Given that,

Mass of rocket m=5000Kg

Acceleration a=20m/s2

Speed v=800m/s

g=10m/s2

Now, thrust force on the rocket

Ft=vr(dmdt)

Net force on the rocket

Fnet=FtW

ma=vr(dmdt)mg

(dmdt)=m(g+a)vr

Rate of gas ejected per second

(dmdt)=5000(10+20)800

dmdt=187.5kg/s

Hence, the amount of gas ejected per second is 187.5 kg/s
