Question

A 600 ml vessel containing oxygen at 800 mm and a 400 ml vessel containing nitrogen at 600 mm at the same temperature are joined to each other. The final pressure of the mixture is:
  1. 1400 mm
  2. 720 mm
  3. 1000 mm
  4. 700 mm

A
1400 mm
B
700 mm
C
720 mm
D
1000 mm
Solution
Verified by Toppr

For an ideal gas equation;
PV=nRT

For O2 , no. of moles = PVRT = 0.6×800RT=480RT

For N2, no. of moles = 0.4×600RT=240RT

Total no. of moles = 480RT+240RT=720RT = n

Pressure of final mixture = nRTTotalvolume=720RT×RT1 = 720 mm
