A and B are two fixed points 5 cm apart and C is a point on AB, such that AC is 3 cm. If the length of AC is increased by 6%, the length of CB is decreased by:
  1. 8%
  2. 6%
  3. 7%
  4. 9%

A
8%
B
9%
C

Solution

Given that, AB=5 cm and AC=3 cm.
The length of AC is increased by 6%.

To find out: The percentage by which the length of BC will decrease.

We have, AB=5 cm and AC=3 cm
BC=53=2 cm

If AC is increased by 6%, its length will become,
AC+6% of AC=3+6100×3
AC=3.18 cm

Now, BC=ABAC
BC=53.18=1.82 cm

Hence, decrease in length of BC=21.82 cm=0.18 cm

%decrease=0.182×100
9%

Hence, the BC will decrease by 9%.
