Question

A batsman hits back a ball straight in the direction of the bowler without changing its initial speed of 12ms1. If the mass of the ball is 0.15 kg, determine the change in momentum of the ball. (Assume linear motion of the ball)
  1. 3.6kgm/s
  2. 5kgm/s
  3. 7kgm/s
  4. 3.5kgm/s

A
3.5kgm/s
B
7kgm/s
C
3.6kgm/s
D
5kgm/s
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The initial momentum of ball P1=mv, after batsman hits ball and reverses its direction, momentum of ball P2=mv
Magnitude of change in momentum Δp=|P2P1|=|2mv|=2m|v|
from data given in question m=0.15kg;|v|=12m/s
ΔP=2×0.15×12=3.6kgm/s
