Question

Assertion :A bell ringing in an evacuated jar cannot be heard. Reason: Sound waves needs a medium to travel.
  1. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
  2. Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
  3. Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
  4. Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct

A
Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct
B
Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
C
Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
D
Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
When a bell rings , sound is produced , but as the jar is evacuated so it has no medium for sound waves to travel , therefore no sound will be heard . Because sound waves are mechanical longitudinal waves and mechanical waves require a medium , having the properties of inertia and elasticity , and in vacuum these properties are absent hence sound doesn't travel in vacuum . Therefore given assertion and reason are correct .
