Question

A block A of mass 4kg is placed on another block B of mass 5kg and the block B rests on a smooth horizontal table. If the minimum force that can be applied on A so that both the blocks move together is 12N,find the maximum force that can be applied on B for the blocks to move together.
  1. 25 N
  2. 30 N
  3. 48 N
  4. 27 N

A
27 N
B
25 N
C
48 N
D
30 N
Solution
Verified by Toppr

In the first case, friction acts only between the 4kg block and the 5kg block.
As a result if 12N is the force required for both the blocks to move together,
In the second case, we consider both the blocks as a system and the force acting between them is an internal force.
Thus the ratio of the forces applied on a block to the mass of the block should be a constant.
124=F9
Hence, the maximum force F = 27 N

A block A of mass 5 kg rests over another block B of mass 3 kg placed over a smooth horizontal surface. There is friction between A and B. A horizontal force F1 gradually increasing from zero to a maximum value is applied to A so that the blocks move together without relative motion. Instead of this, another horizontal force F2 gradually increasing from zero to a maximum value is applied to B so that the blocks moves together without relative motion. Then -

A block of mass m is placed on another block of mass M lying on a smooth horizontal surface as shown in the figure. The coefficient of friction between the block is μ. Find the maximum horizontal force F (in Newton) that can be applied to the block M so that the blocks move together with same acceleration? (M=3 kg,μ=0.1,g=10m/s2).
