Question

A body initially at 60C cools to 50C in 10 min. What will be it's temperature at the end of the next 10 min. if the roc temperature is 20C.Assume newton's law of cooling.
  1. 42.50C
  2. 45C
  3. 40.46C
  4. 44.23C

A
45C
B
40.46C
C
44.23C
D
42.50C
Solution
Verified by Toppr

According newton's law of cooling,
T=Ts+(ToTs)ekt
where, T= temp. at any time t
To=initial temp.
Ts=surrounding temp.
t=time
k=cooling constant
since body cools initially from 60 to 50 in 10 min.
so from above equation,
50=20+(60-20)ek(10)
34=e10k ................eqution(1)
we need to find the temp. at the end of next 10 min. i.e. 20 min. from start
so again using newton's law of cooling formula,
T=Ts+(ToTs)ekt
T=20+(60-20)ek(20)
T=20+(40){e10k}2 ..................equation (2)
from equation (1) and (2), we get
T=20+(40)(34)2
T=42.5
