Question

A bucket full of hot water is kept in a room. It cools from 75oC to 70oC in T1 minutes, from 70oC to 65oC in T2 minutes and from 65oC to 60oC in T3 minutes. Which of the following relation is correct?
  1. T1>T2>T3
  2. T1<T2<T3
  3. T1<T2>T3
  4. T1=T2=T3

A
T1>T2>T3
B
T1<T2<T3
C
T1<T2>T3
D
T1=T2=T3
Solution
Verified by Toppr

By Newton's law of cooling
dθ2θ2θ1=kdt
where k is inversely proportional to product of mass and specific heat of the water, θ1 and θ2 are surrounding and average water
temperatures and dt is the time interval.
given that for case (i) dθ2=75oC70oC=5oC, θ2=75+702=72.5oC, dt=T1
dθ2θ2θ1=kdt572.5θ1=kT1T1=5k(72.5θ1)
case (ii) dθ2=70oC65oC=5oC, θ2=70+652=67.5oC, dt=T2
dθ2θ2θ1=kdt567.5θ1=kT2T2=5k(67.5θ1)
case (iii)dθ2=65oC60oC=5oC, θ2=65+602=62.5oC, dt=T3
dθ2θ2θ1=kdt562.5θ1=kT3T3=5k(62.5θ1)
by comparing above three cases T1<T2<T3
option (B) is the correct answer
