Question

A chemical commonly called dioxin has been very much in the news in the past few years. It is the byproduct of herbicide manufacture and is thought to be quite toxic. Its formula is C12H4Cl4O2. If you have a sample of dirt (28.3 g) that contains 1.0×104% dioxin, the moles of dioxin in the dirt sample is expressed as x×108 mol. Find the value of x as nearest integer.

Solution
Verified by Toppr

The formula of dioxin =C12H4Cl4O2
Molar mass of dioxin =12(12)+4(1)+4(35.5)+2(16)=322 g/mol
Mass of dioxin =28.3×104100=2.83×105g
Number of moles of dioxin =2.83×105322=9×108=x×108
Hence, x=9

Assertion:
Dioxins are a class of toxic molecules primarily released into the environment by improper waste incineration practices which have long-lasting impacts on the environment.
Reason:
Dioxins are fat-soluble molecules which are passed through food chains with the highest levels being found in high-level consumers such as birds of prey.
