(A) : Compound microscope is consist of two convex lenses, one object of very small focal length with short aperture and one eyepiece, E of moderate focal length and large aperture. The ray diagram showing the formation of image by a compound microscope is shown in the diagram.

(B) : The Magnifying power, M=me×mo where me and mo are the individual magnifying powers o objective and eye lens.
M=v0u0(1+Dfe)--------- (1) when the final image is at near point.

M=v0u0×Dfe-----------(2) when the final image is at the infinity.
From the equations (1) and (2) it is clear that for achieving a large magnification the focal length fe must be small. Hence the answer.

(a) Draw a labeled ray diagram showing the formation of a final image by a compound microscope at least distance of distinct vision.
(b) The total magnification produced by a compound microscope is 20. The magnification produced by the eye piece is 5. The microscope is focused on a certain object. The distance between the objective and eyepiece is observed to be 14 cm. If least distance of distinct vision is 20 cm, calculate the focal length of the objective and the eye piece.
