Question

A heavier body moving with certain velocity collides head on elastically with a lighter body at rest. Then
  1. the smaller body starts to move with twice the velocity of the bigger body in the same direction
  2. smaller body starts to move in the same direction with same velocity as that of bigger body
  3. smaller body continues to be in the same state of rest
  4. the bigger body comes to rest

A
smaller body continues to be in the same state of rest
B
the smaller body starts to move with twice the velocity of the bigger body in the same direction
C
smaller body starts to move in the same direction with same velocity as that of bigger body
D
the bigger body comes to rest
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Let the velocity of bigger ball be v.
Mass be M>> mass of small ball(m)
After collision, let the velocities be v1 and v2 respectively.
Hence, conserving momentum:
Mv=Mv1+mv2
And for elastic collision:
v=v2v1
=> v1=v2v
Replacing this in momentum equation:
Mv=Mv2Mv+mv2
=> v2=2v(M/(M+m)) which approximates to 2v, the limit M>>m
