Question

A horizontal uniform glass tube of 100cm length is sealed at both ends contains 10 cm mercury column in the middle the temperature and pressure of air on either side of mercury column are respectively 310C and 76cm of mercury if the air column at one end is kept at 00C and the other end at 2730C the pressure of air which is at 00C is (in cm of Hg )

  1. 76
  2. 102.4
  3. 122
  4. 88.2

A
102.4
B
122
C
76
D
88.2
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The correct option is C 102.4
Let x be the displacement of the mercury column on the side whose temperature is changed to 0C. New pressure on both sides must be same so that the mercury column remains in equilibrium.
PVT is constant for air column.
P0(45)273+31=P1(45x)273+0

and P0(45)273+31=P1(45+x)273+273

Therefore, x=15 cm and thus P=102.4 cm of Hg

A glass tube, sealed at both ends, is 100 cm long. It lies horizontally with the middle 10 cm containing mercury. The two ends of the tube contain air at 270C and at a pressure 76 cm of mercury. The air column on one side is maintained at 00C and the other side is maintained at 1270C. Calculate the length of the air column on the cooler side. Neglect the changes in the volume of mercury and of the glass.

A glass tube sealed at both ends is 1m long. It lies horizontally with the middle 10 cm containing Hg. The two ends of the tube equal in length contain air at 270C and pressure 76 cm of Hg. The temperature at one end is kept 00C and at the other end it is 1270C Neglect the change in length of Hg column. Then the change in length on two sides is

Q5

A thin tube of uniform cross section is sealed at both ends. It lies horizontally, the middle 5 cm containing mercury and the parts on its two sides containing air at the same pressure P. When the tube is held at an angle of 60 with the vertical, the length of the air column above and below the mercury pellet are 46cm and 44.5cm respectively. Calculate the pressure P in centimeters of mercury. The temperature of the system is kept at 30C.
