Question

A lighter body moving with a velocity v collides with a heavier body at rest. Then :
  1. the lighter body rebounces with twice the velocity of bigger body
  2. the lighter body retraces its path with the same velocity in magnitude
  3. the heavier body does not move practically
  4. both (2) and (3)

A
the lighter body rebounces with twice the velocity of bigger body
B
the lighter body retraces its path with the same velocity in magnitude
C
the heavier body does not move practically
D
both (2) and (3)
Solution
Verified by Toppr

In a collision system where m1 moves with u1 initially and m2 is at rest with m2>>>m1.
Let the final velocity of m1 be v1 and m2 be v2.
Assumption: Let the collision be elastic. Using linear momentum conservation and equation for coefficient of restitution,
m1u1=m2v2+m1v1
v2v1=u1

We get v1=m1m2m1+m2u1

v2=2m1m1+m2u1

Using m2>>>m1, we get v1=u1 and v2=0.
