Question

A line charge λ per unit length is lodged uniformly onto the rim of a wheel of mass M and radius R. The wheel has light non-conducting spokes and is free to rotate without friction about its axis as shown in above figure. A uniform magnetic field extends over a circular region within the rim. It is given by,
B=B0k(ra;a<R), or B=0 (otherwise).
What is the angular velocity of the wheel after the field is suddenly switched off?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

Line charge per unit length, λ=Q/2πr

at distance r, the magnetic force is balanced by the centripetal force.

So, BQv=Mv2/r

also the angular velocity, ω=v/R=B2πλr2/MR

So for ra;a<R, we get:

ω=2Boa2λk/MR

A line charge λ per unit length is pasted uniformly on to the rim of a wheel of mass m and radius R. The wheel has light non-conducting spokes and is free to rotate about a vertical axis as shown in figure. A uniform magnetic field extends over a radial region of radius r given by B=B0^k(ra;a<R)=0 (otherwise). What is the angular velocity of the wheel when this field is suddenly switched.
