Question

A man is standing on a weighing machine placed in a lift, when stationary, his weight is recorded as 40 kg.If the lift is accelerated upwards with an acceleration of 2m/s2, then the weight recorded in the machine will be
  1. 64 kg
  2. 48 kg
  3. 32 kg
  4. 80 kg

A
48 kg
B
32 kg
C
80 kg
D
64 kg
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Mass of the man m=40kg
Acceleration of lift in upward direction a=2m/s2
Let the weight shown by machine be N.
Equation of motion for the body : ma=Nmg
We get N=m(a+g)
N=(40)(2+10)=480 N
Thus weight of the man recorded by machine W=Ng
W=48010=48 kg
