Question

A man with some passengers in his boat, starts perpendicular to the flow of river 200m wide and flowing with 2m/s. Speed of boat in still water is 4m/s. When he reaches half the width of river, the passengers asked him that they want to reach the point just opposite to the end from where they have started. If the direction due which he must row to reach the required end is α=2tan1(1x). Find x.

Time taken by boat to reach from A to B is
t=100vy=1004=25s
Also AD=vxt=2t=50m
From B to C
Actual velocity of boat should be along BC. This actual velocity is found by resultant of vrel and vr
vrel=vbvr
x component of actual velocity is
vx=vrvrelsinα=24sinα
y component of actual velocity is
vy=vrelcosα
The time taken from B to C is
to=BEvy
=100vrelcosα=1004cosα
=25cosα
Also
EC=vxt
=(24sinα)to
=(4sinα2)25cosα
But
EC=AD=50m
Thus
EC=(4sinα2)25cosα
50=(4sinα2)25cosα
50cosα=100sinα50
cosα=2sinα1
1+cosα=2sinα
2cos2α2=4sinα2cosα2
tanα2=12
α2=tan112
α=2tan212

A river 400 m wide is flowing at a rate of 2 m/s. A boat is sailing at a velocity of 10.0 m/s with respect to the water, in a direction perpendicular to the river. Find the time (in seconds) taken by the person to reach the opposite bank at a point directly opposite to its starting point considering that after reaching the opposite bank, the person walks at 4 m/s if needed to reach the point directly opposite to its starting point.
