A ray of light is incident normally on one refracting surface of an equilateral prism. If the refractive index of the material of the prism is 1.5, then :
the emergent ray is deviated by 30∘
the emergent ray is deviated by 60∘
the emergent ray just graces the second reflecting surface
the ray undergoes total internal reflection at second refracting surface
the ray emerges normally from the second refracting surface
A
the emergent ray is deviated by 30∘
B
the ray undergoes total internal reflection at second refracting surface
C
the emergent ray is deviated by 60∘
D
the emergent ray just graces the second reflecting surface
E

Key Concept: The ratio of sine of the angle of incidence to sine of angle of refraction (r) is a constant called refractive index.
i.e. sinisinr=μ (a constant). For two media, Snell's law can be written as,
1μ2=μ2μ1=sinisinr
Given, refractive index of a prism
n=1.5=32
As. μ=1sinθ⇒μ=1sin60∘
μ=2√3⇒sinC=1n
sinC=23⇒C=sin−123
C=42∘
Angle of incidence > critical angle
So, total internal reflection takes places at second refracting surface.
