Question

A ray of light is incident on a prism ABC of refractive index 3 as shown in figure.
(a) Find the angle of incidence for which the deviation of light ray by the prism ABC is minimum.
(b) By what angle the second prism must be rotated, so that the final ray suffer net minimum deviation.

  1. 30o, 60o
  2. 60o, 30o
  3. 60o, 60o
  4. None of these

A
60o, 60o
B
None of these
C
30o, 60o
D
60o, 30o
Solution
Verified by Toppr

Minimum deviation
i1=i2=i and r1=r2=r

and r1+r2=A

r=A/2=30

Using Snell's law,

sini1sinr1=μ

sini1=3sin30

sini1=32

i1=60

When the prism is rotated anticlockwise by 60 the combined prism will become a slab as shown in the figure 2. In this case the net deviation by the prism will be zero as the deviation by the two prism will be equal and opposite.
