let $x$ be his total sales

he gets $5.5\%$ of his total sales amount

and bonus $0.5\%$ on sales above $10000$

i.e $0.5\%$ on $(x-10000)$

given that he earns $1990$

$⟹\frac{5.5}{100}\times x+\frac{0.5}{100}(x-10000)=1990$

$⟹\frac{5.5\times x}{100}+\frac{0.5\times x}{100}-\frac{0.5\times 10000}{100}=1990$

$⟹6x=199000+5000$

$x=34000=$total sales
