Question

A series LCR circuit with L = 0.12 H. C = 480 nF, R = 23 Ω is connected to a 230 V variable frequency supply.
(a) What is the source frequency for which current amplitude is maximum. Obtain this maximum value.

(b) What is the source frequency for which average power absorbed by the circuit is maximum. Obtain the value of this maximum power.

(c) For which frequencies of the source is the power transferred to the circuit half the power at resonant frequency? What is the current amplitude at these frequencies?

(d) What is the Q-factor of the given circuit?

Solution
Verified by Toppr

(a)
Vo=2V=325.2 volts

Tt resonance, ωRL=1/(ωRC)

We know that,
ωR=1/LC=4166.67rad/s

Resonant frequency,
νR=ωR/2π=663.48Hz

Io=Vo/R=14.14A

(b)
Maximum power absorbed
P=12I2oR12(14.14)2×232299.3W

(c)
The angular frequencies at which the power would be half of the power at resonant frequency will be:
ω=ωR ±Δω

Here, Δω=R2L

Δω=232×0.1295.83 rad/s

So,
ω1=4166.67+95.83=4262.3 rad/s

ω2=4166.6795.83=4070.87 rad/s

The amplitude of current at these frequencies will be the RMS value.
I=I0214.141.41410 A

(d)
Q factor is given by
Q=1RLC=1230.12480×109=21.74
