Question

A spherical metal shell A of radius RA and a solid metal sphere B of radius RB(<RA) are kept far apart and each is given '+Q'. Now they are connected by thin metal wire. Then:
  1. EinsideA=0
  2. QA>QB
  3. σAσB=RBRA
  4. EonsurfaceA<EonsurfaceB

A
EinsideA=0
B
QA>QB
C
σAσB=RBRA
D
EonsurfaceA<EonsurfaceB
Solution
Verified by Toppr

The potential for both the objecs is same so, KQARA =KQBRB
or
QAQB=RARB
As RB<RA we get QA>QB
Above equation represents B is correct option.
From Gauss law the electric field inside a spherical shell is zero so option A is correct.
Now σA=QA4πR2A and σB=QB4πR2B
Thus σAσB=QAQB×(RBRA)2=RARB×(RBRA)2=RBRA
Thus option C is also correct.
Electric fields on the surface of shell and sphere are
EA=σAϵo
and
EB=σBϵo
Thus EAEB=σAσB<1
or
EA<EB
So option D is also correct.
